The "Continuous Slide" Advantage: In the John Louis Home system, the J-Hook acts as the bridge between your solid wood shelves and your hanging clothes. Unlike wire shelving where the rod is welded in place, our J-Hook design allows the garment bar to run continuously under the brackets. This means you can slide a hanger from one end of the closet to the other without getting stuck—a small engineering detail that makes a massive difference in daily use.

Before You Start

Before you drill, ensure you have the correct components.

Parts Checklist

  • Metal J-Hooks (2)
  • Mounting Screws: #8 1 in. Screws (4)
  • Bar Screws: #6 1 1/4 in. Self-Tapping Screws (2)

Required Tools

  • Tape Measure
  • Pencil
  • Power Drill

Step-by-Step Walkthrough Installation

1. Determine Your Bracket Depth (Crucial Step)

The placement of your J-Hook changes based on how deep your shelves are. Identify your bracket size before drilling:

For 16-inch Deep Shelves:
Measure exactly 3 inches back from the front tip of the wooden angle bracket and make a mark. This specific setback ensures your hangers won't hit the back wall once installed.

For 12-inch Deep Shelves:
No measuring required. Simply align the hook to be flush with the front face of the wooden bracket.

2. Secure the J-Hook

Once positioned, hold the hook firm. Use the #8 1-inch screws to secure the J-Hook into the wooden bracket. Drive the screws into the wood until tight. Expert's Tip: Use a low drill speed to prevent the screw from stripping, as you are driving into solid wood.

4. Secure the Garment Bar

Place your metal garment bar into the J-Hooks. To prevent the bar from sliding left or right when you move hangers, secure it using the #6 1 1/4 in. self-tapping screw. Drive this screw through the hole in the J-Hook directly into the metal bar.

Create Specialized Hanging Areas

Garment bars aren't just for closets. We see customers using J-Hooks to add high-capacity hanging rods to laundry rooms for air-drying delicates, or creating "double-hang" zones in foyer closets to maximize coat storage. It's the easiest way to add functionality to an existing shelf.

Need to expand? Whether you need extra J-Hooks to double your hanging space or the solid wood Angle Brackets to support them, you can find the individual components below.
