Professional Insight: Unlike standard benches, this Open Top model functions as a deep-storage chest—ideal for hiding bulky items like winter blankets or toys that don't fit in cubbies. While it's great on its own, we often use these with our Solid Wood Hall Trees to create a complete storage solution in mudrooms. This gives you heavy-duty hanging storage for coats without eating up any extra floor space. To see how to add this upgrade, click the link below.

Step-by-Step Walkthrough Installation
Step 1: Building the Frame Box
Align one side panel with the back panel on a flat surface. Check the pre-cut grooves—they must line up perfectly to accept the bottom panel later. Insert barrel nuts into the back panel and thread the barrel bolts through the side. Tighten with the Allen wrench. Next, slide the bottom panel into the grooves of the back and side until fully seated. Attach the second side panel to capture the back panel.
Step 2: Completing the Enclosure
Align the front panel with the bottom base, ensuring the panel sits into the groove. Insert and tighten the remaining barrel bolts to lock the solid wood box frame together. Ensure the unit is square before proceeding to the lid installation.
Step 3: Attaching the Swivel Hinges
Locate the two Swivel Hinges (the smaller, non-spring hinges). Position them on the top edge of the back panel at the pre-drilled locations. Secure them using the 1/2-inch screws. Note: Do not fully torque these down yet; allow a tiny bit of play for aligning the lid in the next step.
Step 4: Lid & Spring Hinge Installation
Place the bench top onto the unit. Secure the Swivel Hinges to the lid using the 1/2-inch screws. Next, install the Spring Hinges (Safety Supports) inside the box. Attach the bottom of the spring hinge to the side panel and the top arm to the bench lid using the 3/4-inch screws. These prevent the heavy solid wood lid from slamming shut.
Step 5: The Sliding Tray & Final Touches
This unit features a removable internal organizer. Place the wooden tray onto the internal rails; it is designed to slide left and right for easy access to the storage below. Finally, place the cushion on top and press the bolt caps into the exterior holes for a seamless finish.
