Professional Insight: Adding garment bars is the easiest way to maximize the utility of your John Louis Home shelf kits. Because our bars hang freely below the shelves, you have the flexibility to create "double-hang" zones for shirts or leave open space for long dresses.
Working around corners? Installing garment bars in a corner requires careful spacing to ensure clothes don't overlap. We highly recommend reviewing our corner installation video before you drill your first hole.

Step-by-Step Walkthrough Installation
Step 1: J-Hook Attachment
Installer Tip: If you are adding this to an existing shelf, we strongly recommend removing the wood angle brackets from the wall first. It is much easier to attach the J-Hook accurately on a flat workbench than while reaching over your head.
For 16-inch Deep Shelves: Measure 3 inches back from the front tip of the wooden angle bracket and make a mark. Align the front of the J-Hook with this mark.
For 12-inch Deep Shelves: Align the J-Hook so it is flush with the front nose of the wooden bracket.
Secure the hooks using the #8 1 in. screws.
Step 2: Mount the Angle Brackets
With the J-Hooks firmly attached, mount your Angle Brackets to the wall. Position them flush against the back wall and tucked tightly under the front shelf rail. Secure with the #8 3 in. screws (using wall anchors if no stud is present).
Step 3: Assemble the Bar Ends
Insert a metal Bar End into the open tube of the garment bar. Twist the end cap clockwise to expand the internal fins, locking it tightly into place. Repeat for the opposite end. Pro Tip: If the bar end spins loosely inside the tube, pull it out and slightly bend the metal fins outward to create more friction before re-inserting.
Step 4: Lock the Bar in Place
Place your assembled bar into the J-Hooks. To prevent the bar from sliding left or right when moving hangers, you must lock it down. Drive the #6 1 1/4 in. self-tapping screw through the small hole in the J-Hook directly into the metal bar.
Bar Installation for Corners:
If you are installing two bars that meet in a corner, install the first bar completely. Then, hang a piece of clothing on it near the corner. Use the edge of that clothing to mark where your second bar should end. This ensures your clothes slide freely without bunching up in the corner.

Design Beyond the Closet
Garment bars are incredibly versatile beyond just the bedroom. We see customers using these kits to create heavy-duty drying racks in Laundry Rooms or sturdy coat storage in Foyer Closets. The garment bar kit system provides the strength needed for heavy winter coats or wet laundry that wire shelving simply can't match.
