John Louis Home Solid Wood Kitchen Pantry Installation Guide

Installing a John Louis Home kitchen pantry kit is a straightforward DIY project using individual wall-mounted hardware and cut-to-fit solid wood shelving. Instead of relying on a hanging top rail that concentrates heavy loads along upper drywall, our system anchors each shelf directly into your wall studs using heavy-duty metal L-clips and solid wood curved brackets. This creates a permanent, non-sagging structure that holds kitchen appliances and groceries as solidly as custom built-in pantry.

Pre-Installation Checklist: Tools & Room Preparation

Pantry walls are almost never flat, and corners are rarely a true 90-degree square. Because our system uses independent wall hardware and shelf supports rather than a rigid, pre-drilled wall track, you aren't forced into fixed stud locations or predetermined shelf heights. You control the spacing, level, and corner fit based on the exact dimensions of your room.

  • Project Difficulty: Beginner to Intermediate DIY (basic measuring, leveling, drilling, and sawing)
  • Estimated Time: 4 to 5 hours for an L-shaped corner; 6 to 8 hours for a 3-wall U-shaped layout
  • Tools Required: Tape measure and pencil. 2-foot or 4-foot carpenter’s level (a longer level makes corner alignment much easier). Stud finder. Cordless drill with driver bits and a saw (for trimming solid wood shelves to length). Household scissors (for trimming the clear acrylic shelf liners). Step ladder

1. Reach-In Pantries (Single Wall Pantry)

  • The Goal: Mounting straight, wall-to-wall shelf runs across a single wall or shallow pantry opening using wood support brackets and metal hardware.
  • Pro-Tip: Measure your wall width at three heights—top, middle, and bottom. Drywall in shallow reach-in closets often bows inward toward the center, so always cut your solid wood shelves to match the narrowest measurement so they slide into place without binding or gouging the drywall.

2. L-Shaped Walk-In Pantries (Compact, Standard & Large Kits)

  • The Goal: Leveling your main back wall run, anchoring support brackets into wall studs, and tying the side shelves into the front edge with  shelf end hardware.
  • Pro-Tip: Always install your back wall run first. Once that main wall is anchored and leveled, your side shelves butt directly against the front rail of the back shelves. This keeps your corner square and prevents brackets from binding.

3. U-Shaped Walk-In & Butler's Pantries (Compact, Full & Large Butler's Kits)

  • The Goal: Wrapping three walls in continuous 16-inch solid wood shelving while preserving an open center aisle.
  • Pro-Tip: Always strike a continuous level line across all three walls before mounting any brackets. If your left and right side walls differ in length by even a quarter inch, trim each side shelf to match its specific wall only after the back wall run is completely installed.

The 4-Step Installation Sequence

1. Locate Studs & Mark Shelf Heights

Run your stud finder along the walls and mark stud centerlines with a pencil. Use your level to mark your horizontal shelf lines.

For 4-shelf kits: Space shelves roughly 13 to 14 inches apart to leave ample headroom for countertop appliances and tall canisters.

For 5-shelf kits: Keep the top four tiers closer together (10 to 12 inches apart) for canned goods and spice containers, leaving a taller 15-inch opening under the bottom shelf for floor bins and beverage crates.

2. Mount the Back Wall First

Always install your back wall shelves before touching the side walls. Fasten the solid wood support brackets and metal L-clips directly into your wall studs using the supplied screws. Securing directly into wall studs gives the shelves their 25 lb-per-foot rating and keeps the wood from bowing under heavy canned goods.

3. Measure & Trim Shelves to Fit

Measure the distance from the face of the mounted back shelf to your side wall. Mark your solid wood side shelves and cut them to length using a fine-tooth hand saw or miter saw. Take the included clear acrylic shelf liners and trim them to match the cut shelf lengths using household scissors.

4. Secure Corners & Lay Down Liners

Butt the side shelves against the front rail of the back wall shelf. Lock the shelves together using the metal shelf end hardware provided. Once the shelves are installed, drop the clear acrylic liners onto the shelves. The liners provide a flat, stable surface for small jars and bottles while keeping oils and syrups off the factory wood finish.

A Note from Our Founder

"Pantries carry concentrated, dead weight. A stack of canned tomatoes, gallons of bottles, and kitchen appliances add up to hundreds of pounds fast. Hanging rail systems put all that pull onto the top few inches of your drywall, which leads to forward sag over time. We use independent wood support brackets and all metal hardware installed straight into the wall studs on every single shelf. Once it's screwed to the studs, it isn't going anywhere." — Gregg Tines, Founder

  • ★★★★★ "Solid!"

"Ripped out the builder wire shelves. Took about three hours on a Saturday afternoon with my brother helping. The 16-inch depth easily holds all of our monthly groceries without any movement" — Brian M., Michigan

  • ★★★★★ "Liners are a great added touch."

"My main concern with slatted wood shelving was small jars or bottles tipping over into the gaps. Having the clear acrylic liners in the boxes took care of it. They sit flat inside the shelf, and when there is a mess, I just rinsed the plastic liner in the sink." — Karen T., North Carolina

  • ★★★★☆ "Handled our crooked corners without hassle."

"Our pantry corner was out of square by almost an inch from top to bottom. Because each shelf cuts to length individually, I was able to shave each shelf to match the wall's problem. Installing the back wall first made the sidewall shelves straightforward." — Dave R., Texas

Collapsible content

Q. Why do you use individual shelf hardware instead of a top hanging rail?

A. Pantries hold far more concentrated weight than clothes closets. Top-rail systems transfer the entire load to a single horizontal track screwed into the top of the drywall, which often pulls forward or flexes under heavy loads. Mounting individual brackets directly to wall studs distributes weight evenly down the wall, allowing each shelf to hold up to 25 lbs per foot without sagging.

Q. Do I need specialized power tools to trim the shelves to size?

A. No. Because our shelves are 100% solid wood rather than dense composite, you can make clean cuts using an ordinary fine-tooth hand saw. A miter saw makes the cuts faster, but it is not required. The included clear acrylic liners cut easily with standard kitchen scissors.

Q. What should I do if a wood angle bracket does not line up with a wall stud?

A. It is recommended to install hardware and support brackets into wall studs where available. If there is no wall stud present, you can use the included 50lb rated wall anchors provided and still maintain the same solid support and strength.

Q. Why must the back wall be installed before the side walls?

A. In both L-shaped and U-shaped layouts, the back shelf run establishes your room level and determines the length of the sidewall shelves. Setting the back wall first allows the side shelves to butt cleanly against the front face of the back shelf, making an aesthetic and clean corner.

Q. How do the clear shelf liners stay in place over the slats?

A. The clear liners drop directly into the recessed slats between the front and rear wood rails. Because they sit inside this lip, it stops moving forward when you pull items off the shelf.
