John Louis Home Laundry Organizer Installation Guide
Step-by-step instructions for your laundry or utility room.
Installing a John Louis Home laundry room organizer is a straightforward DIY project that provides professional, built-in look results. Our solid wood laundry organizers anchor directly into your wall studs or drywall using heavy-load anchors, metal hardware and solid wood supports. This independent mounting system is what gives the shelving its massive 50 lbs per linear foot weight capacity, easily supporting heavy detergents and appliance vibrations.
Pre-Installation Checklist: Tools & Room Preparation
Laundry walls are almost never perfectly flat, and corners are rarely a true 90-degree square. Because our system uses independent wall hardware and shelf supports rather than a rigid, pre-drilled hanging track, you aren't forced into fixed stud locations or predetermined heights. You control the spacing, level, and fit based on the exact dimensions of your room.
- Project Difficulty: Beginner to Intermediate DIY (basic measuring, leveling, drilling, and sawing)
- Estimated Time: 2 to 4 hours, depending on wall width.
- Tools Required: Tape measure and pencil. 2-foot or 4-foot carpenter’s level. Stud finder. Cordless drill with driver bits and a fine-tooth hand saw or miter saw (for trimming solid wood shelves and metal garment bars to your exact wall length). Step ladder.

The "Zero-Step" Storage Tower Setup
For side-by-side washers and dryers, the most popular configuration is centering the 6-foot accessory storage tower directly between the machines.
By anchoring the tower in the middle, you create a dedicated sorting hub. You then measure outward from the sides of the tower to your walls, cut the 4-foot shelves and garment bars to fit that exact distance, and secure them. This gives you two distinct hanging zones for clothes, keeping your most-used detergents right at elbow height in the center.
The 4-Step Installation Sequence
1. Locate Studs & Mark Shelf Heights
Run your stud finder along the drywall and mark the centerlines with a pencil. Use your carpenter's level to mark where you want the top of your tower and your horizontal shelf lines.
Pro-Tip (The Reach Rule): Don't mount the storage tower too high. Place the shelf that will hold your heaviest detergent exactly at elbow height to prevent shoulder strain.
2. Assemble and Mount the Storage Tower
Build the solid wood tower frame on the floor, then lift it into position between your marked stud lines. Secure the tower directly into your wall studs using the provided metal L-clip brackets. Getting this storage hub leveled and anchored perfectly is the most important step of the build.
3. Mount Shelf Hardware & Cut Shelves to Size
Mount your shelf mounting brackets securely onto the back wall, and attach the shelf end hardware to your side walls and/or tower side. Measure the exact distance from the outside wall of the mounted storage tower to your side drywall, mark your 100% solid wood shelves, and cut them to size using a saw if required. Because it is real solid wood, the shelves cut cleanly and easily. Place the trimmed shelves onto the hardware and secure them in place.
4. Install Garment Bars, J-Hooks & Angle Brackets
If required, measure and cut your garment bars to size. Install your J-hooks and angle brackets securely into the wall studs, making sure your angle brackets are positioned firmly underneath the shelves for maximum weight support. Finally, slide your garment bars onto the J-hooks and secure them. All done.
A Note from Our Founder
"Laundry rooms carry heavy, concentrated dead weight. A stack of wet towels and economy-sized detergent jugs add up to hundreds of pounds fast. Hanging rail systems put all that pull onto the top few inches of your drywall, which leads to forward sag over time. We use independent wood support brackets and all-metal hardware installed straight into the wall studs on every single shelf. Once installed, it isn't going anywhere." — Gregg Tines, Founder
Success Stories: Real People, Real DIY Results
Don't take our word for it. Here is what homeowners have to say about how our laundry organizers handle everyday use:
-
★★★★★ "Massive storage without the custom price."
"We replaced our wire shelves that were bowing in the middle and put up the 10-foot kit. Honestly, we can store twice as much stuff now without it looking like a total mess. We had a custom closet company out, and they wanted an insane amount of money. This gave us the exact same high-end look for way less. Took us a few hours to put up and it’s rock solid." — Brian M., Michigan
-
★★★★★ "Used their free design service and put it up myself."
"I had no idea how to lay out our laundry room, so I sent my wall dimensions into their design team and they sent back a custom plan tailored to the room. I was worried a custom layout would be a nightmare to install, but because it follows the exact same straightforward installation steps, I was able to knock it out over the weekend. Looks incredible!" — Sarah L., California
-
★★★★☆ "I actually did it"
"I was honestly pretty nervous about tackling a complete laundry organizer on my own, but the instructions were super straightforward and easy to follow. Once you take your time and follow the steps, it all comes together perfectly. I'm just so proud I got this up all by myself!" — Rachel K., Ohio

Collapsible content
Do I need specialized power tools to trim the shelves to size?
No. Because our shelves are 100% solid wood rather than dense composite or laminate, you can make clean cuts using an ordinary fine-tooth hand saw. A miter saw will make the cuts faster, but it is not strictly required.
What if my laundry wall is less than 10 feet wide?
That is the beauty of a cut-to-fit system. While the storage tower is a fixed width (26.25 inches exterior), the side shelves and metal garment bars can be easily trimmed to fit any wall space from 4 feet up to 10 feet seamlessly.
Do I need to anchor every bracket into a wall stud?
A. It is recommended to install hardware and support brackets into wall studs where available. If there is no wall stud present, you can use the included 50lb rated wall anchors provided and still maintain the same solid support and strength.
Are there upright posts or legs touching the laundry floor?
No. Every John Louis Home laundry organizer is 100% wall-hung. Because there are no floor posts resting on the ground, your entire floor remains completely open and clear for rolling laundry hampers, vacuums, and easy mopping.
Can I install this system by myself?
While one person can do it, having two people makes mounting the storage tower and leveling the side shelves much faster and easier. Most homeowners complete the entire project in an afternoon.
